Equally at home as performer and composer Matt London aspires to create emotive music inspired by free improvisation and was recently shortlisted for a 2018 BASCA British Composer Award in the Jazz Composition for Large Ensemble Category.
A graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music [MMus Distinction] studying with Rob Buckland and Andy Scott [saxophone] and with current doctoral study at Brunel University London under the supervision of Colin Riley and Christopher Fox [composition] he continues to explore and develop a forward looking approach to his music centred around the impromptu.
Today his main musical influences as a performer-composer are drawn from master improvisers and composers such as Paul Dunmall, Barry Guy, Brian Irvine, Paul Rogers and Wadada Leo Smith to name a few.
Matt leads Ensemble Entropy a dynamic new music ensemble / group / band exploring the space between composed contemporary music & free improvisation. Gigs / concerts often include featured guests to showcase their talents before joining the ensemble! These include; improvisation piano maverick Matthew Bourne, free improvisation giant Mark Sanders [drums] and electronics inventor Jenn Kirby.
February 2018 saw a large ensemble edition of the group at IKLECTIK named Orchestra Entropy - bringing together 10 improvisers including Sarah Gail Brand, Benedict Taylor, Tom Ward to perform Matt’s extended devised work RITUALS plus music by Megan Steinberg and Jennifer Walshe.
Matt is a proud D'Addario Woodwinds Performing Artist.
