Wednesday 1 November 2017
We were delighted to welcome the fearless drummer/percussionist Mark Sanders as our featured guest! The evening kicked off with Georgia Cooke's crème de la crème of Oxygen a lively duo for that traditional line up of alto flute & double bass based on watching the swirls of leaves in the wind! A free improv set follwed featuring Sanders / Bennett / London. The half ended with Phil Maguire's hypnotic work ferric for alto flute, baritone saxophone, drums and electronics.
Freya Waley-Cohen's funky jig Spin for the ensemble opened the second half in energetic fashion. To conclude the night all the performers came together to interpret a set of graphic panels devised by Matt London. These Panels served as starting points for the performers to improvise with just a hint of direction!
Mark Sanders is a highly sought after performer in the improvisation world having played with many renowned Jazz and Improvising musicians including; Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Derek Bailey, Henry Grimes, Roswell Rudd, Peter Brotzmann, Barry Guy, Otomo Yoshihide, Jah Wobble, Sidsel Endresen, Charles Gayle, Peter Evans, William Parker, John Butcher and Paul Dunmall.
